It seems to be a common experience.
You are about your day, doing what you do.
You are at work or at school…
…some place where many people would say that they know you.
And you say something that triggers it.
They don’t say it to be rude.
In fact most of the time it is said with the utmost surprise and curiosity.
“You are a Catholic?”
YUP.
So why is it…
…that the more you are educated…
…or likeable…
…joyful…
…successful…
…or accomplished…
…the world is surprised at our love for the Lord and His Church?
It is almost as if they had set the requirements for belonging to the Body of Christ…
…and you just don’t measure up…or rather, far exceed them.
SO TAKE IT AS A COMPLIMENT
You are helping to change the public image of the Christian.
Because hey…
…we are not all bumbling fools who…
…if we really just thought about what we believe…
…then would recant in utter embarrassment.
NOPE.
We Christians are as diverse as they come.
We come from every class and from every continent.
We are white collar workers and blue collar workers.
We are grandmas and grandpas…
…mothers and fathers…
…and the youth ready to take on this world.
And if someone is surprised that you are a Catholic…
…well, I can only imagine that it is because they have never met one before.
Keep smiling, friends.
in Christ, patrick
